Unified Soccer
In Unified Soccer, teams are made up of people of similar age and ability, which makes practices more fun and games more challenging and exciting for all. Dedicated to promoting social inclusion through shared sports training and competition experiences, Unified Soccer joins people with and without intellectual disabilities on the same team. It was inspired by a simple principle: training together and playing together is a quick path to friendship and understanding.
Basketball
Basketball provides great competition for our team. Five-on-five team competition is available at Waubonsie Valley HS. Athletes in Illinois who participate in basketball, compete locally at a District Qualifying event. Teams who win a gold medal are eligible to advance to the State Basketball Tournament held in Normal in March.
Swimming
Aquatics, which is considered a lifetime activity, is appropriate for a range of abilities. Competition events are based on a variety of strokes. As in all Special Olympics sports, athletes are grouped into competition divisions according to ability level, age and gender when appropriate. Athletes compete locally in a District Qualifier. Gold medal winners from the districts are then eligible to advance to the state level competition held at the Summer Games in Normal in June.
Track & Field
Athletics offers a wide variety of traditional track and field events. Competition is also provided for athletes with lower ability levels in a variety of development track and field events. As in all Special Olympics sports, athletes are grouped into competition divisions according to ability level, age and gender when appropriate. Gold medal winners are eligible to advance to the state level competition held at the Summer Games in Normal in June.
Bowling
Bowling is perhaps the most popular sport at Waubonsie Valley. Bowling competition is conducted using a traditional format. However for those of lower ability or with physical disabilities, bowling has been modified by utilizing a ramp on the
